Litigation: Defending software publisher in complex patent litigation

Our client publishes a well known software product. It was sued in 2009 for patent infringement. The client initially engaged a leading East Coast law firm to handle its defense, but the fee estimates were millions of dollars. They asked Young Basile if we could deliver great results with less expense.

At Young Basile we have seasoned patent litigators, many of whom have come to our firm from major national law firms. Our co-founder Tom Young, for example, is one of Michigan's most experienced patent trial lawyers. Yet, our rates are well below the $600-$800 commonly charged by larger firms.

We assembled a team and went to work. The case was complicated, involving over 100 patent claims and significant international discovery. Despite this complexity, we assisted our client in reaching a satisfactory settlement in 2010. Our fees were less than half of the originally anticipated budget.

We pride ourselves on managing costs without compromising quality, even in complex and highly contested matter. It takes discipline and planning, two virtues frequently forgotten by other firms in the heat of battle.
